Involve: Moments In Time Quilt Project
When Patsy joined the Involve program, she was looking for something new, maybe drumming or painting her next story. What she found was so much more. With the help of Therese, a CRCS facilitator known for her warmth and “why not?” attitude, a simple idea grew into a beautiful community project that celebrates creativity and history.
The concept was simple: invite people to design a quilt square that captured a special moment in time. Patsy embraced the project, researching quilting and helping others share their stories.
Therese supported participants with warmth and encouragement, turning small questions into sparks of inspiration. If someone missed a session, she would call to check in, one call often brought them back, one square at a time.
The quilt became more than fabric; it became a tapestry of connection. Contributors came from across Australia and around the world, England, Malta, Denmark, Germany, New Zealand, and Fiji. Like the quilt itself, their backgrounds were rich and varied, woven together through storytelling and sewing. Each block told its own story, reflecting memories, heritage, and personal journeys.
“Although many participants knew each other before, creating their blocks and writing their stories deepened those connections. Learning about one another’s histories-built understanding and friendship, a reminder that stories have the power to unite us.” Therese said.
And it’s not just this project 75% of participants told CRCS that Involve helps them feel connected to their community, and 83% said they trust us to do the right thing by them. This quilt is a perfect example of why: it’s about belonging, creativity, connection and care.
When the finished quilt was displayed at Belconnen Community Centre, the excitement was incredible. People gathered around, pointing out their squares, smiling, and sharing memories. Comments filled the room:
“It could have been even bigger, there are so many more stories to tell.”
“My husband didn’t remember the story at first, but when he saw the square, the memory came rushing back to him.”
Moments like these show the magic of creativity, it brings people together, sparks conversations, and helps us reconnect with our own memories.
For Patsy, the quilt was a chance for others to shine and feel a sense of belonging. “Supporting this vision and helping it grow feels like the beginning of something very special for the community.”
For Therese, it was a reminder of why creativity matters. “Creativity opens doors for people to connect, it’s not just about making something beautiful, it’s about making people feel they belong.”
