Caring for an older loved one is rewarding and important, but everyone needs a break sometimes.
Flexible respite, part of the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP), gives carers help so they can rest, recharge, or get things done knowing their loved one is safe and supported by caring, friendly and capable help at home or in the community.
Many participants already have a referral code for flexible respite through My Aged Care. Using it can make caring easier and more enjoyable for you and the loved one you support.

How You Might Use Flexible Respite
✔ A Break During the Week
A support worker visits three mornings a week to help your loved one with breakfast, showering, and a walk. You get time to rest and recharge or attend appointments.
✔ A Social Outing for the Person You Support
A support worker takes your loved one to their regular club meeting or out for a coffee. They stay connected and active, and you enjoy a few hours guilt-free to yourself.
Why You Should Use Your Referral Code
Using your flexible respite code means:
- You get government-subsidised support, making it affordable
- You prevent carer burnout
- Your loved one enjoys goalfocused, positive activities
- You both get more balance, independence, and enjoyment in daily life
Taking respite is not “giving up.”
It’s good care, for you and the loved one you support.
