Supporting Canberrans to recover well at home
Capital Region Community Services (CRCS) and Community Services #1 (CS#1) are proud to continue helping Canberrans to access short-term support for a health issue, illness or injury through the ACT Government’s new Community Assistance and Temporary Supports (CATS) program. This free program provides people in the ACT with temporary services to discharge safely from hospital or remain in their homes while they recover from an illness, injury or other health issue.
CRCS and CS#1 have joined forces to provide support under the CATS program: CRCS will deliver medical and allied health transport, while CS#1 will provide care coordination and help participants transition to other community supports and longer-term services appropriate to their needs, such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
“The CATS program will help Canberrans with health conditions to recover in their homes. The supports will be tailored to each participant’s needs, so they can get back to leading fulfilling lives sooner,” said Mandy Green, CEO of CRCS.
“Having provided transport services in our community for nearly 40 years, CRCS is excited to expand our program to deliver medical and allied health transport to even more Canberrans in need.”
Simon Bennett, CEO of CS#1, said, “Community Services #1 is proud to become the provider of a dedicated and experienced team who will deliver care coordination and bridging support services across the ACT.”
CATS replaces the previous Community Assistance Support Program (CASP) and the Flexible Family Support (FFS) and Transitional Care programs. The range of CATS services will be provided by seven providers across the ACT.
“We are working closely with the organisations that previously provided CASP to ensure participants have a smooth transition to the new program,” said Mandy Green, CEO of CRCS.
“Together with CS#1, we are committed to providing for those members of our community who need some support to recover from health issues. This is part of our wider mission to empower people to live their best life,” Ms. Green said.
“In jointly providing supports under the new CATS program, CRCS and CS#1 will deliver much-needed services to the community.’ Mr. Bennett said.

The work of CRCS and CS#1 will be complemented by five other providers, each delivering elements of the CATS core services.
- ACT Disability and Aged Care Advocacy Service (ADACAS) will provide an individual advocacy service.
- Anglicare NSW South, NSW West & ACT will deliver care coordination services.
- Carers ACT will provide services that support carers and nurture care relationships, as well as a Warm Hospital Discharge service that provides connected support for people discharged from hospital to home.
- Life Without Barriers will deliver personal care and domestic assistance.
- Northside Community Service will deliver personal care, domestic assistance and food services.

Following on from the signage placed around the Belconnen Community Centre and notices distributed to participants, we are sharing this update to confirm that the Swanson Court carpark has now permanently closed as of Tuesday 2 April 2025, due to a new development at the site by JWLand.
Young people in Belconnen now have easier access to free, confidential health and wellbeing support with the arrival of the T25 Clinic at Belconnen Youth Centre. Every Thursday from 2pm to 5pm the T25 Clinic van, Mini Pat, will be on-site offering a safe and welcoming space for young people aged 12 to 25. There’s no need for an appointment – just drop in when you need support.
The Canberra Day Appeal 2025 has wrapped up for another year and we are grateful to everyone who contributed, either by making a donation or helping to spread awareness. Thanks to the generosity of our community, employees and corporate supporters, we raised an amazing $6,736.40 – an increase from $5590 in 2024. These funds will go directly towards recruiting, training and supporting more volunteer transport drivers, ensuring people in our community can get to their essential medical appointments for chronic health conditions such as cancer and kidney disease.
Patsy is a lifelong storyteller and a creative spirit. For nearly 20 years, she was a storyteller at early childhood education centres, captivating children with her tales – sometimes using handmade props to bring them to life, other times sharing stories she wrote herself. Creativity has always been second nature to her, and when she’s caught up in a project, time flies by often leading to late nights. Though she recently stepped away from storytelling, she continues her creative pursuits, including a quilt project through Involve (stay tuned!).
For Therese Beckmann, sewing isn’t just about fabric and stitches – it’s a way of telling stories, bringing people together and creating something meaningful. After 30 years of working in sewing, dressmaking and teaching, she realised she wanted to take her skills beyond the retail space and into the community. She had always felt drawn to the senior age group, especially after hearing students in her art classes say, “This is better than therapy.” Hearing it over and over made her realise just how powerful creativity could be in bringing people together and improving wellbeing.
