HAPPY NEW TẾT
Canberra Festive Pop-Up Exhibition Celebrating Vietnamese Lunar New Year
HAPPY NEW TẾT, a mixed art exhibition by The Vietnam Centre.14 February – 25 February 2022 with an opening celebration 5:30pm Wednesday 16th February 2022.
Just as the way it is titled, Happy New Tết offers a chance to experience the old but gold traditions of the Vietnamese new-year festive season .
In the olden days, for the Lunar New Year, Vietnamese people would ask for or purchase new paintings to decorate their homes. The theme of these paintings revolved around the auspicious and beautiful elements in life, reflecting the hopes of people as one was preparing one’s minds and hearts to enter new year. The exhibition aims to rekindle the bygone eager atmosphere when people shopped for new Tết paintings. Using various media, the artists’ inventive use of heritage and culture create traditional, but at the same time, novel, and unique artworks. Some artists embed their modern mindset hidden deep in their works while the others break the way to bring about strange but familiar fusion.
If you are ever curious about the historical and cultural stories of those who form the fifth largest ethnic community in Australia, this is definitely not to be missed. Last but not least, you will have the chance to obtain a lucky woodblock printing, just as Vietnamese people did to decorate their home in spring!
