Lucy’s Story: Support for Children and Families

Lucy is a bright, bubbly 9-year-old whose world was turned upside down after losing her grandfather, aunt and cousin all in one year. Once outgoing and cheerful, she became anxious, withdrawn and often tearful.

At school, she clung to teachers when her mum left, and at home she struggled to sleep alone, waking her parents for reassurance that they were safe.

At Wellbeings, Lucy’s psychologist gently encouraged her to share memories of her loved ones and express her feelings through drawing and storytelling. This helped her make sense of her grief and fears about losing others. Together with her parents, she learned ways to manage big emotions and rebuild a sense of safety.

Over time, Lucy began to reconnect — with her parents, her friends, and her own confidence. Her family describes the sessions as giving them the tools to support each other, turning grief into a journey they could face together. Most importantly, Lucy has rediscovered her place of belonging and is starting to feel like herself again.
