Kyle’s Story: Finding Calm at NEIST Playgroup

When three-year-old Kyle came to Neurodevelopment Early Intervention Support and Training (NEIST) playgroup for the first time with his mum, he was overwhelmed. He cried for half an hour and clung tightly to her. His mum explained that new places are very hard for him, which has made daycare and other services feel out of reach.

Playgroup facilitator Ashleigh gently reassured Kyle’s mum that his tears were okay and wouldn’t disturb anyone. Instead of pushing him to join in, she asked about his interests and quietly offered a toy shark. She even blew bubbles and sang a little bubble song, giving Kyle space to feel safe. Slowly, he began to calm, explore the room, and eventually even drifted off to sleep on the soft play blocks.

By his second visit, Kyle cried only briefly before recognising familiar toys—and Ashleigh’s friendly face. He soon settled into play, enjoying the bubbles and moving around the space with more confidence. By the third week, Kyle arrived without tears at all. He walked in happily, explored activities on his own, and even interacted with other parents and staff.

For his mum, the difference was profound. She described the relief of finding a place where Kyle felt comfortable and accepted—a safe space that welcomed both of them. NEIST playgroup has given Kyle a chance to explore the world at his own pace, and given his mum the confidence that there is somewhere he belongs. Together, that sense of calm and connection has made a real difference in their wellbeing.
