Getting Your License
We offer a free program to help young people get their learner’s license, as well as one for those who need additional support to progress to their P plates.
Pre-Learner Driver Licence Course
Looking to get your Learner Licence? For ACT residents, you need to complete the Pre-Learner Driver Licence Course, which teaches you how to be a safe, accountable and responsible road user.
At the Belconnen Youth Centre, young people can do this course for free over three days. On the last day, you’ll have the opportunity to try the ACT Road Rules Knowledge Test with the support of a Youth Worker*. If you pass, we will give you completion certifications that you can take to an Access Canberra centre to get your Learners Licence.
What the course covers
Over the three days of the course, participants will:
- complete the Pre-Learner Driver License Course
- undertake a P.A.R.T.Y (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth) injury awareness and prevention session about driving and the use of alcohol/drugs
- revise the Road Rules Handbook
- take the ACT Road Rules Knowledge Test with the support of a Youth Worker.
Eligibility
To attend, you must be:
- at least 15 years and 9 months old and no more than 25 years old
- available to attend all three days
- able to provide proof of your identity and residency (Access Canberra requirement to issue a Learner Licence).
* Participants must attend the entire course to receive their completion certificate and to sit the Road Rules Knowledge Test.
Easy P
Our Easy P program helps young people who need additional support to progress from a Learner license to a Provisional license.
- be aged 15 years and nine months to 25 years old
- hold a current Learner’s Licence
- be able to commit to a minimum of one lesson a week
- have circumstances that mean they need additional support to achieve their Provisional Licence.
We undertake individual assessments for each referral to determine eligibility, and there is a waiting list.
