Tuning Into Kids
Tuning into Kids® is a six-week evidence-based, emotion coaching parenting program that teaches parents and carers ways to help their child develop emotional intelligence.
Emotion coaching is a way of responding to emotions that can help children understand, regulate, and work through their emotions so they can manage their behaviour and respond in socially appropriate ways.
Through interactive sessions, participants in Tuning into Kids® learn practical skills and strategies for building stronger relationships with their children. We teach parents and carers to notice children’s emotions, especially before emotions have become overwhelming for the child. We encourage parents and carers to accept, validate and empathise with their child’s emotions, help reflect upon or name the emotions being experienced and, if necessary, help their child work through the emotions and problem-solve.
By improving emotional literacy and communication, parents and carers can help children develop a better understanding of themselves and others, leading to improved mental health and wellbeing.
Children with higher emotional intelligence:
- have greater success with making and keeping friends
- have better concentration at school
- are more able to calm down when upset or angry.
Tuning into Kids® helps parents to:
- improve interactions with their child
- better understand their child
- help their child learn to manage their emotion
- help to prevent behavioural problems
- teach their child to deal with conflict.
Tuning into Kids is back for term 4.
