Planned Support: Evie’s Journey

When 15-year-old Evie first came to the Youth Centre in early 2025, she was looking for a way out of a very unsafe home life. Bright and self-aware, she shared her experience of severe domestic violence.

By her second visit, she told her Youth Worker she would not return home and asked for police support. Temporary accommodation was arranged, but from there, Evie’s journey was anything but simple.

Over the next three months, she faced homelessness, illness and constant barriers. Because of her age, she couldn’t access most crisis accommodation, struggled to get health and mental health care, wasn’t eligible for Centrelink or banking, and received little education support. Even after making a police statement and securing protection orders, her ability to make decisions for herself was often questioned. But with consistent advocacy and support, Evie began to rebuild stability.

Now 16, she has safe supported accommodation, regular counselling and Centrelink income. She’s managing her own finances, receiving legal support, and working toward medical independence.

Evie’s journey shows not only her strength and resilience, but also the vital role of youth work in standing beside young people when systems fail them. It’s a reminder of how important it is to listen, act quickly, and provide support that truly meets young people where they are.
