Creating Belonging Through Art

A group of spirited ten– and eleven-year-old girls from a Canberra primary school joined a Bungee Youth Resilience program designed to strengthen social skills and build resilience. Meeting weekly across eight weeks, they started with plenty of energy but also faced challenges around communication, peer conflict, and feelings of being left out.

At first, working together wasn’t easy. But as the weeks went by, art became a way to explore and express what was happening in their friendships. Rorschach inkblot paintings helped them see how different perspectives shape conflict. Later, sculpting clay “friendship figures” opened space for laughter, reflection and new ways of relating to each other.

Excited to share their journey, the girls organised the “Bungee Friendships” exhibition. They created posters, curated their display, and proudly showcased their art near the school reception, inviting classmates, teachers and families to celebrate with them. Their enthusiasm spread through the whole school.

By the end of the program, the change was clear. The girls were talking and playing with more respect, listening to each other’s ideas, and showing genuine interest in one another. What began as a group struggling with conflict ended in a community built on empathy, connection and belonging.

Bungee Art Exhibition
Held twice a year, the Bungee Art Exhibitions showcase the creativity and resilience of our young artists. Families, friends and facilitators come together to celebrate their achievements and stories through art.
