Supporting Milli Through Big Changes and Big Feelings

Supporting Milli Through Big Changes and Big Feelings

Milli, a bright and sensitive 5-year-old, recently transitioned from long-term childcare to a new preschool and intensive care setting.

This shift brought many changes to her daily life, and soon after starting, educators noticed Milli struggling with emotional regulation – especially during challenging peer interactions.

Her behaviours, initially seen as defiant, were actually protective responses to feeling overwhelmed. With support from Family Foundations-Wraparound, Milli’s family and educators began to understand her actions as expressions of unmet emotional needs.

Together, they developed gentle strategies to help Milli feel safe and understood—like co-regulation techniques, clearer communication, and advocacy within her learning environment. Over time, Milli began to thrive. Her emotional outbursts became less frequent, and she grew more confident in navigating friendships.

Her parents also blossomed in their role, learning to interpret her behaviours with empathy and advocate for her needs. This journey shows the power of early support, compassion, and collaboration in helping a child feel seen, safe, and supported.
