Claire and Daniel’s Story: Reconnecting with Culture and Belonging

Reconnecting with Culture and Belonging

Claire, a single mum, wanted to give her son Daniel the chance to grow up proud of who he is. But life had made that hard. Claire’s own parent was part of the Stolen Generations, leaving her with little connection to her community or culture.

On top of this, Daniel’s father spoke negatively about Aboriginal identity and his new partner treated Daniel poorly because of his heritage. This left Daniel feeling isolated, confused, and struggling with his sense of self.

That’s when our Family Support team stepped in. Together, we worked with Claire and Daniel to make sure their cultural identity was respected and celebrated. We linked them with local Elders and Aboriginal community organisations, giving Daniel safe role models and a sense of belonging. At school, extra supports were put in place to strengthen his emotional wellbeing.

We also stood alongside Claire as she navigated housing challenges and family court processes, making sure Daniel’s safety and stability were prioritised.

Today, Claire says her family feels stronger, more connected and hopeful. Most importantly, Daniel is beginning to feel proud of who he is – finding strength in his culture and his community.
