Putting Down Roots in a New City Through Nature Journalling
Annual Report 2025–26

When Anne moved to Canberra from the United Kingdom, she found the transition challenging. Far from family and friends, she was adjusting to a new environment where the landscapes, plants, colours and smells felt very different from those she had known at home.
Through Connect Up, she joined Nature Journalling, an activity that brings together creativity, social participation and an appreciation of the local environment. Over time, her involvement grew from participant to volunteer facilitator, and she now helps others feel welcome, build confidence and connect through the activity.
“When I first arrived in Canberra, I didn’t know anyone and everything felt unfamiliar. Nature Journalling helped me connect not only with other people, but also with the environment around me. Becoming a facilitator has given me the opportunity to help others feel welcome and find that same sense of belonging.”
Anne’s journey from participant to volunteer facilitator reflects Connect Up’s strengths-based approach. Community members are encouraged to share their skills, interests and experiences, while creating welcoming opportunities for others to participate and develop a sense of belonging.
