Annie’s Journey: Staying Active, Independent and Connected

Jason’s Story: From Overwhelmed to In Control

For Annie, wellbeing means making her own decisions, staying active and participating in social activities she enjoys. Annie is 75 and lives independently, with support from her daughter and grandchildren in Brisbane. After migrating from Malta in 1963, she built a rich life through family, work and community involvement. However, arthritis, reduced mobility and a fall began disrupting her routines. Losing the ability to drive also made it harder to attend appointments, shop and participate in community activities, affecting her confidence and connections.

“The most meaningful change has been Annie’s increased social engagement. She feels connected, supported and part of a community.”

Finding support through My Aged Care

Annie contacted My Aged Care and, following an assessment in August 2025, was referred to CRCS’s Involve program. Her goals were to remain physically active, socially connected and able to safely access community activities. Annie continued making her own health and lifestyle decisions, with employees listening to her preferences and providing accessible inform

Support shaped around Annie

Through Involve, Annie began attending weekly drumming sessions, supporting coordination, enjoyment and social connection. She also joined Back in Balance, a gentle exercise class supporting strength, balance and confidence following her fall. Both activities reflected Annie’s interests, mobility needs and goals. She remained in control, choosing her pace, taking breaks and speaking openly with employees about her comfort and wellbeing.

Friendships beyond the program

The activities have helped Annie maintain her wellbeing and a meaningful weekly routine, but one of the most important outcomes has been new friendships. Annie now meets other participants for afternoon tea after exercise classes, enjoying conversation, companionship and shared stories.

These catch-ups have strengthened her sense of belonging and reduced the isolation associated with limited transport and social opportunities. Annie continues to live independently, remain active and make her own choices. Her experience shows how flexible, person-centred activities can support wellbeing through movement, routine and welcoming spaces where friendships extend beyond the program.
