Christine’s Story: Staying Active and Independent

Christine is a 77-year-old who has been part of the CRCS Involve social groups program since 2021.

She manages a number of ongoing health conditions, including respiratory issues, restless legs syndrome, high blood pressure and some hearing loss. Despite these challenges, she continues to live independently and looks after most of her daily needs on her own.

Christine stays closely connected with her family – her daughter lives locally in Canberra, while her two sons live interstate. Her children and grandchildren remain actively involved in her life and provide important emotional support.

Christine is determined to maintain her independence by keeping physically active and socially connected. She values her autonomy and chooses activities that support both her health and wellbeing.

Every Monday, Christine attends the woodwork group at the Ngunnawal Community Centre, where she has developed new skills and created pieces ranging from lazy Susans to footstools. Beyond her creative work, she makes time for her physical health, attending at least two gym sessions each week. She particularly enjoys the Multi-strength and Build Fitness classes, which help her stay strong and mobile.

For Christine, Involve means more than just activities – it’s about skill development, social connection, and a sense of accomplishment. By combining creative and physical activities, she is building the healthy, independent and fulfilling lifestyle she wants.
